The College of Development Communication, through the Department of Development Broadcasting and Telecommunication (DDBT) and the UP Community Broadcasters’ Society (ComBroadSoc), conducted a three-day community broadcasting masterclass for students of the Laguna University (LU) on 27, 29, and 31 March 2023.
The initiative was part of Leader Ka K! (LKK), which is Radyo DZLB’s youth-oriented educational magazine program led by Asst. Prof. Mark Lester M. Chico and UP ComBroadSoc. It was also in partnership with the Youth Development Affairs (YDA) Office of Laguna headed by Ms. Fatima “Pinky” Villaseñor.
The Laguna University (LU) hosted the masterclass, which was participated in by its BA Communication students, as well as some students from the Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU) Santa Rosa Campus.
On the first day of the workshop, Dr. Trina Leah T. Mendoza, DDBT chair, talked about the production of a participatory video and the scriptwriting process. Afterwards. Ms. Dara Miracle Montalbo, ComBroadSoc Chief Anchor, facilitated a workshop on writing a rundown sheet for LKK.
On the second day, Asst. Prof. Chico and Mr. Joseph Lydio R. Robles (DDBT University Extension Specialist I) talked about video production using professional video editing software. They also facilitated a workshop wherein the students were tasked to shoot promotional videos of their academic program using their smartphones and DSLR cameras.
On the last day of the workshop, Mr. Christopher N. Calamlam (DDBT Media Production Specialist) talked about post production. He also facilitated a workshop wherein the students were tasked to post-process the promotional videos they did. The purpose of this activity is to enhance video editing skills of the students, that when it comes to editing videos, one needs both technical and soft skills in order to arrange and modify video shots in order to produce a coherent structure. Afterwards, the participants watched their productions for comments and critiquing.
One of the longstanding programs of DDBT, LKK partners with YDA in engaging various youth groups in Laguna. YDA is also one of the academic field instruction partners of CDC.
LKK is webcast on the Radyo DZLB Ang Tinig ng Kaunlaran Facebook page twice a month on Fridays at 12:00 PM.
The UPLB Ugnayan ng Pahinungod, in partnership with CDC and the Department of Development Journalism’s Los Baños Times, had also previously conducted a journalism training for LU’s students in February 2023. (Maurice Paner)
